Graham Sutherland 1903-1980

Graham Sutherland was born in 1903 in Streatham. He attended Epsom School and pursued his studies in art at Goldsmith’s School of Art from 1921 to 1926, where he quickly established himself as a distinguished etcher. Serving as an official War Artist, Sutherland captured the devastation of bomb damage in London. However, his recognition only surged after the war. In 1960, he was honored with the Order of Merit He passed away in London in 1980. Throughout his career, Sutherland cultivated a fascination with natural forms of growth, focusing on elements like tree roots and thorn bushes, which he often portrayed in close-up or foreshortened perspectives. These organic structures, a recurring theme in his work, frequently exuded a sense of menace, evoking qualities reminiscent of human or animal traits.
