REIGATE GOES POP
Thursday 4th June to Sunday 26th July

Celebrating the defining movement of Pop Art, Adam’s Gallery presents a curated exhibition of landmark works by leading figures of the 20th-century Pop Art movement.

Pop Art emerged in the 1950s in the United Kingdom and later developed in the United States as a response to both the inward focus of Abstract Expressionism and the exclusivity of traditional fine art. In Britain, artists such as Richard Hamilton and Eduardo Paolozzi used collage and painting to examine postwar consumer culture and mass media, drawing heavily on American advertising and popular imagery.

The Independent Group helped shape the movement’s intellectual foundation by encouraging the study of both elite and popular culture. In the United States, artists including Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Jasper Johns, and Robert Rauschenberg brought Pop Art to international attention through works featuring everyday objects, comic imagery, and commercial symbols.
