Astrid Zydower MBE 1930–2005

Discovering the Private World of Astrid Zydower brings together for the first time the intimate etchings and drawings of an artist best known for her large-scale public commissions.

A Life of Resilience

Born in 1930 and escaping Nazi persecution via the Kindertransport in 1939, Zydower’s journey from a child refugee to a recognized British artist is a powerful story of survival. Awarded an MBE in 1968 , she was one of the few women entrusted with representing Britain on the global stage, creating major figures for the UK Pavilions at Expo 67 (Montreal) and Expo 70 (Osaka).

A Unique Artistic Range

Zydower’s portfolio was unusually diverse. While her work graced sacred spaces—such as the Nativity Scene for St. Paul’s Cathedral and the Orpheus fountain at Harewood House —her talent also attracted contemporary icons.

She executed private commissions for members of the Rolling Stones, including Ulysses and Argus for Charlie Watts and Cyparissues and the Stag for Sir Mick Jagger.

The Exhibition:

A Quiet Discovery

While Zydower is known for her sculpture, her later years were often devoted to etching. These works, which have never before been displayed, reveal a quieter, more introspective side of her artistry.

This exhibition offers a rare opportunity to view these fresh-to-market works. It is a chance to discover the private voice of a woman who made a significant, yet often understated, contribution to British art.

Astrid was an incredible drawer. Her figure studies are a testament to this, showing a refined eye for proportion and an elegant sensitivity to pose. Alongside her etchings, the exhibition will feature a small collection of these wonderful, flowing drawings that capture both movement and quietude.
